What is IEEE MCBU Women in Engineering Affinity Group?

IEEE MCBU WIE Affinity Group is an affinity group where people who advocate that women and men are equal in fields such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and who try to reflect this awareness to the people around them meet and events are organized in this direction throughout the year.

Our activities include educational seminars which will carry us further and raise awareness, workshops, webinars and Tea-Talks where we host experts in their fields and ask them questions about their fields of expertise, “The STAR Event” in which we discuss our department introduction and engineering topics that we think can guide our high school friends who want to be engineer candidates, The Women in Companies Event, which we organize on 8th of March – International Women’s Day, in order to introduce successful women on their area. Apart from activities and events, there is the work of our journal “Minerva” founded in the 2020-2021 academic year.

Through Minerva engineer candidates can follow the news about developments in engineering, science and technology in Turkey and around the world. There are also articles about women who have accomplished very successful works in their fields besides all kinds of films, TV series and recommendation pages for students on “Minerva”.

Equality is a universal concept that means that individuals in society have the same rights.

It is the fact that engineering is not just a field for men, and women take part in every branch without difficulty, contrary to what is thought.

Awareness

It means "being conscious of something". In this direction, the awareness of women's existence in science, technology, engineering and many other fields is instilled.

Women's Rights

Women's rights are rights that represent equality and freedom. The most fundamental right of women is to be born free and to have equal rights with men. The Women in Engineering Affinity Group always attaches importance to this.

Impressive Women in Companies

Impressive Women in Companies (IWC) is a salon event where successful female business people who have made a name for themselves in the sector and companies that attach importance to equality between women and men. It was held on March 11, 2022 this year, and names such as Gözde Tezer, Tuğba Parıltı, Bahar Yıldırım, Ebru Terzioğlu and Kevser Çimenli were included.

Star Project

Star Project is a project in which we explain engineering departments and provide training on these contexts to help our high school friends make career choices.

World Women's Rights Day Webinar

The webinars that have entered our lives in the online period are the live broadcast of Tea&Talks online. A webinar was held on December 6, involving an engineer and two lawyers.

Minerva

It is a magazine that includes engineering, technology and current news published by IEEE MCBÜ WIE every month.

My name is Esra Şimşek, I'm a 2nd year Computer Engineering student. In the 2020-2021 period, I took part in the active team as WIE Promotion-Design Manager and worked as a publicity designer in the activities prepared by our teammates for you. At the same time, I also undertook the task of designing our monthly magazine “ Minerva” which we published with the IEEE MCBU WIE team. Because I felt that I had improved myself thanks to activities and responsibilities I took on, I started to work as WIE president in the 2021-2022 education period in order to progress further.
